Learn More about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Chicago Freedom Movement
To honor the 50th anniversary of the Chicago Freedom Movement, this ambitious Civil Rights exhibition was created. The Chicago Freedom Movement was led in part by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and addressed open housing and racial justice in 1966 that brought the Southern Civil Rights Movement to Chicago.
Dr. King had been invited to Chicago to address a number of issues of unequal treatment experienced by African-Americans, and the problem of substandard and overpriced housing quickly went to the top of the list. The many marches and protests that followed became the centerpiece of King's northern campaign.
